Far from being a two-trick pony, The Lost Weekend will host several other overseas performers. Underrated pop-punk trio The Thermals venture out from the States, as do belatedly-hyped indie/experimental rockers The Dirty Projectors and southern USA hard rock veterans Nashville Pussy. Cali art-rock group Deerhoof are one of the most original bands on the bill, with frontwoman Satomi Matsuzaki singing in English and Japanese, while indie fans will adore Wooden Shjips.
International Artists Beef up The Lost Weekend
A promoter for the event issued a statement this week, declaring “Our plan all along was to hold a camping festival. In the end we felt we could not run the event correctly due to various external conditions placed on it.” The details of these factors are unclear, but ticket sales and buzz for the festival have been below expectations, despite the strong line-up. With The Lost Weekend coming at the tail-end of a packed summer festival schedule, live music-lovers in Queensland are either partied out or their credit cards are maxed out.
‘External Conditions’ and Poor Sales Prompt Venue Change
The Lost Weekend is offering a full refund to all ticketholders if they do not wish to attend the relocated festival, while tickets pre-purchased for the Ivory Rocks event are valid for entry to the Riverstage and Botanical Gardens on March 6th and 7th. Punters have the option of purchasing one or two-day tickets. Perhaps most regrettably, the venue change takes away the need for camping, which always adds extra atmosphere to a festival. A bonus of the revamp is that The Lost Weekend is now all ages [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], allowing kids to attend who are much too young to remember the festival’s two headliners in their respective heydays.

The promoter, whose team also puts on the popular Sounds of Spring festival at the RNA Showgrounds in September, expressed a desire to eventually hold a festival at the Ivory Rocks venue – situated about an hour southwest of Brisbane City. The Riverstage and Botanical Gardens venue will reprise its role as a fallback festival site, after Sunset Sounds organisers was denied use of their proposed Byron Bay spot in 2009-10.
Organisers of The Lost Weekend, which was to be held on March 5th-7th at Ivory Rocks, Queensland, have been forced into a venue change less than four weeks out from the inaugural staging of the event. The new destination is Brisbane’s Riverstage and Botanical Gardens [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while it reverts to a two-day format (March 6th and 7th) and will no longer be a camping event. The Lost Weekend is still set to be a cracker however [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a mouth-watering and eclectic mix of local and international acts taking the stage.
The lack of interest around The Lost Weekend is made all the more remarkable by the quality of its headlining bands: alternative/indie-rock legends Dinosaur Jr. and alt-psychedelic stalwarts Brian Jonestown Massacre. Dinosaur Jr. has been active since 1984, reforming in 2005 after an eight-year hiatus. Led by prolific frontman J Mascis, Dinosaur Jr. were one of the main precursors to the Seattle grunge scene, featuring Nirvana, Soundgarden et al. Their 2007 album Beyond was regarded as one of the year’s standout LPs, while last year’s Farm was also warmly received. BJM are perhaps better known for their high turnover of band members and the unpredictable antics of tempestuous leader Anton Newcombe, but they are a live experience to be savoured with a massive back catalogue to dip into.
