The determination and pride of the few people to stay after the town is marked condemned by the federal government is apparent in the homes and the families that remain there. Those who stayed behind after Centralia was condemned and the government paid residents for their property are a subject of ongoing debate today. Many of the residents who remained feel that a conspiracy by the government to take over the coal region in order to make money is the reason the government has not attempted (with diligence) to extinguish the fire.
Centralia is an actual icon to the local people and to those in distant communities who are aware of Centralia’s history. Centralia and the towns of Shamokin, Ashland, and Mount Carmel began as immigrant towns. The demand for coal in the mid 1800s and the desire for a better life brought immigrants from Germany, Italy, the Ukraine, Ireland, and Poland.
Centralia was also known for corruption and murder in connection with the Molly Maguires, seven of which were eventually hung in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.
In order for the town to rebuild, it would need to petition the state government and work with local people to rebuild the community or at least make the history of the area known. The local people are resilient, prideful, hard working, and have a belief that their corner of the world is very much like other communities who at one time were depressed and now thrive.

The physical aspects of the site are ethnic cemeteries, vacant lots where homes once stood, and a continual underground fire that possibly started as far back as the 1940s. On rainy and wintry days, smoke can be seen coming from areas where the underground fire is burning. Trees and stumps are visible. The trunks and branches have turned white due to the gases that come from the fire. Coal mounds can be found and seen in various places around Centralia. A wind farm is seen from the hill of where the fire burns. The wind farm represents the future of energy making the history of Centralia all the more important.
The demographics show that the majority of the residents, who live in and around Centralia have no college education, are middle aged, and are or were blue-collar workers. Centralia was a town built during the industrial age. Most towns of that period became depressed due to their loss of tax base. Jobs moved to other towns, cities [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and to other countries, but many of those towns have fought back, building on their sense of community and history. Unfortunately, Centralia has not had that same opportunity due to the coal fire.

Many of those who remained have lived there all their lives. Their heritage and pride in the area has run as deep as the coal fire that burns. Residents in nearby communities and those who once lived in Centralia share the value of their roots in the area.

Town Pride and Heritage Keeps Residents
The ethnicity of the area can embrace those who have family connections to the various cultures. There is a strong work ethic and pride for culture. In the mid 1800s to the early 1900s the town was known for its prejudices, which is the reason why so many different churches were built and so many different cemeteries are seen throughout the region.
