Jets' [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] explains Revis' value to defense
It’s difficult to underestimate cornerback Darrelle Revis’ value to the New York Jets.
But consider this: in games against the Texans’ Andre Johnson, the Patriots’ Randy Moss, the Bills’ Terrell Owens of Buffalo, the Panthers’ Steve Smith and the Bengals’ Chad Ochocinco of Cincinnati, none of them had more than 35 receiving yards against Revis, who earned his second Pro Bowl invite in three years.
In fact, coach Rex Ryan lobbied for Revis to be named the Defensive Player of the Year (an honor that went to Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson) and met with Revis last weekend to help quell a contract dispute that kept Revis away from the team in the preseason.
Linebacker [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] did his best to explain Revis’ importance to New York’s defense.
“When [Ravens cornerbacks] Samari Rolle and Chris McAlister were at the height of their games – you know, ‘Shake-and-Bake’ – we raised havoc,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “We were able to get to the passer. You’re able to do so many different things when you have two lockdown corners. When you’ve got the best in the game … I don’t know, when Chris was going, if he was considered the best, but he was considered one of the best. But when you have a guy who’s considered the best and then a guy who’s almost 6-3 with lanky arms and has tremendous ball skills and make-up speed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that’s what you ask for because then now teams have to try and attack you in another way. They have to try and attack you. ‘OK, let’s try and go up the seams on their linebackers or let’s test their safeties out.’ And that’s playing into our hands.”
