Unfortunately, The Tooth Fairy came on the heels of a disastrous family comedy, The Spy Next Door, with Jackie Chan. The formula is the same, but the magic is in the details. Critics were very hard on The Tooth Fairy, and many of them just can’t seem to transition from seeing Johnson in anything but R-rated action films. If they would just view it in the right spirit, they would see that The Tooth Fairy is among the best of its kind. If nothing else, it is hard not to root for the loveable giant, Dwayne Johnson.
The Rock has great chemistry with Stephen Merchant, the co-creator of the British sit-com The Office and co-host of The Ricky Gervais Show on radio and podcasts. And Sheckler, a professional skateboarder, is fun to watch as a sports upstart. There is also a cameo by Billy Crystal, reprising his role, more or less, in The Princess Bride.

Parents may be concerned that their children will receive a harsh wake-up call to the fact that there is no such thing as the tooth fairy. They need not worry. Although this sentiment is expressed by the main character, there is plenty of evidence in the story itself that the tooth fairy is alive and well.
The Tooth Fairy is the story of a minor league ice hockey player, Derek Thompson, whom fans nicknamed "the Tooth Fairy" because he knocks out his opponents' teeth. In fact, Thompson is a cynical man whose career has stalled, giving advice to kids such as, "Lower your expectations."
In the Land of Fairies
Thwarted Dreams and Second Chances
When he comes close to telling his girlfriend Carly’s (Ashley Judd) six-year-old daughter that there is no such thing as the tooth fairy, Thompson gets a summons from the Department of Dissemination of Disbelief.
Seeing the Rock in a Pink Tutu
Thompson finds himself in the realm of tooth fairies, where he is assigned to a case worker, Tracy (Stephen Merchant). He meets the head of the fairies, Lily (Julie Andrews), who sentences him to two weeks service as a tooth fairy.

This movie contains a lot of sight gags—the Rock in wings and a pink tutu—and gimics, which the kids will love. As a tooth fairy, Thompson has a bag of tricks, including shrinking paste, so he can get under doorways, invisibility spray, amnesia dust, and “Cat-Away”. There is also plenty of fun for adult chaperones.
There’s a lot of heart in this movie. It’s all about thwarted dreams and second chances. Thompson loses on the ice and with his girlfriend’s children; Tracy dreams of earning his wings and being a tooth fairy himself; and Carly’s son Randy (Chase Ellison) dreams of growing up to be a rock star.
Thompson reluctantly and badly carries out his new duties. The distraction is particularly unwelcome because of the increasing troubles he’s having on the ice. When he misses a goal [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the coach threatens to bench him. And soon, a teen hockey phenom [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mick Donnelly (Ryan Sheckler) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], steals his limelight. Things couldn’t be worse for Thompson.
Thompson learns the hard way how to help himself and those he loves, and that the two can’t be separated.
Dwayne Johnson rocks in territory covered by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jackie Chan, and Vin Diesel—the territory of action heroes who have been co-opted into family entertainment. Johnson has excellent comedic timing, and with his winning smile, all he's needed was a decent script. He found one in The Tooth Fairy.
