Post subject: Iranian, Syrian presidents meet in Tehran
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday met with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al- Assad, who arrived in the Iranian capital in the morning for official talks on the latest regional and international developments.
Ahmadinejad said in the meeting that the current regional situation is changing in favor of the nations' interests, and he called on expansion of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, saying that "regional countries can work together multilaterally in economic fields and such cooperation is in favor of all regional nations not only economically but also politically."
Assad, heading a high-ranking Syrian delegation, called for employment of the entire potentials of the two sides. He then referred to the Middle East peace process and said, "no change is made in the peace process and the talks only seek support for the U.S. President Barack Obama inside America."
He added that,Tiffany, "Iran-Syria cooperation helps regional resistance,Tiffany, peace and security."
Assad is later due to hold talks with the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other Iranian senior officials.
Expansion of all-out ties, particularly the economic cooperation, are also the main objectives of the Syrian president' s visit to Tehran.
Bilateral trade between the two countries is currently valued at 3 billion U.S. dollars and is expected to hit 5 billion dollars in the near future, Iranian satellite channel Press TV reported on Saturday.
Assad's visit is also taking place in response to the February visit to Syria by the Iranian president.
This is Assad's eighth visit to Tehran and his fifth during Ahmadinejad's presidency.
