Post subject: Nash had a goal and two assists
Wings outlast Jackets 6-5 in OT
The Detroit Red Wings aren't letting their latest rash of injuries slow them down.
One night after starting goalie Jimmy Howard and forward Tomas Holmstrom joined the walking wounded, the Wings rallied from a 2-0 deficit, survived a late game-tying goal and got a goal by Johan Franzen 45 seconds into overtime to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-5 on Saturday night.
Holmstrom (broken right hand) and Howard (bruised right knee) were injured In Friday night's 3-2 shootout loss to the Blue Jackets in Columbus. Holmstrom, who won't need surgery, is expected to miss three to four weeks. Howard is likely to be out for a few days. The Wings are already without Mike Modano (severed wrist tendon), Pavel Datsyuk (broken right hand), Danny Cleary (fractured left ankle), Brad Stuart (broken jaw) and Chris Osgood (sports hernia surgery).
"We've got to find different ways, different players to step up each night," said center Darren Helm, who had two assists. "And that's what we've been doing so far."
The Jackets forced overtime when Rick Nash scored with 1:04 left in regulation after the Jackets pulled goalie
Steve Mason Jersey
for an extra attacker. But the Wings took control right from the opening faceoff in OT and kept the Jackets from clearing the zone until Franzen beat
Steve Mason Jersey
with a shot from the inside edge of the right circle for his 19th goal.
Drew Miller had a goal and two assists, and Jonathan Ericsson and Kris Draper each added a goal and an assist for Detroit. Valtteri Filppula and Brian Rafalski also scored.
With Howard and Osgood both sidelined,
NCAA Jerseys
, the Wings used third-stringer Joey macDonald who made 24 saves. MacDonald stopped all 21 shots he faced after relieving Howard on Friday.
"Last night I felt real good. Tonight felt good at times but back-to-back and stuff, you know what? You keep battling. That's all you've got to do," MacDonald said. "They score, you just don't worry about it and try to make that next big save."
It was MacDonald's first NHL win since Dec, 3, 2009, when he beat Columbus 6-3 as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs . It was his first win for Detroit since Feb. 11, 2007.
Nash had a goal and two assists, and Derick Brassard and Grant Clitsome each had a goal and an assist for Columbus, which has lost six of seven. Matt Calvert and R.J. Umberger also scored, and
Steve Mason Jersey
stopped 28 shots.
Two Detroit goals went in off of
Steve Mason Jersey
and two deflected in off of Blue Jackets defenseman Mark Methot. One of the goals went in off of both of them.
"It was just an extremely wild game," Columbus coach Scott "Arniel said. "Almost looked like the last shot was going to win it and that's what happened."
Nash tied the game when his screened wrister from the high slot beat MacDonald. He thought he had won the game with just over 10 seconds left in regulation when he tried to jam the puck between the post and MacDonald's right pad. But a video replay didn't show the puck had gone over the goal line.
"You couldn't see the puck. Ricky thought it was in," Arniel said.
Draper put Detroit ahead 5-4 3:32 into the third when he swatted in a rebound with one hand for his fourth goal. Umberger's power-play goal 1:10 into the third period had tied it at 4-4. Umberger knocked in a rebound on the Jackets' second of two power plays for his 15th goal of the season.
"Our effort has been a lot better the last couple of games," Umberger said. "We gave up some leads, but we showed a lot of heart in battling back.
Brassard and Clitsome gave the Jackets a 2-0 lead before the game was five minutes old. Detroit tied it late in the period on goals by Filppula and Miller.
Calvert's second goal gave Columbus a 3-2 lead 2:57 into the second. But Ericsson banked a shot off
Steve Mason Jersey
's back and into the net 60 seconds later, and Rafalski scored at 8:02 on a shot that hit Methot and went past
Steve Mason Jersey
.
