A common conventional treatment for breast cancer is chemotherapy, which uses a variety of drugs to destroy cancerous cells. The drugs are administered through a vein and a pill. While killing cancerous cells, these drugs also harm healthy cells, resulting in greater incidence of infections, fatigue, bruising and bleeding. Chemo also causes nausea and hair loss.
Radiation therapy destroys cancerous cells and focuses only on the specific part of the breast. There are two types of radiation therapy: external and internal. In external radiation therapy, a large machine is used to administer the radiation. Internal radiation therapy involves the placement of thin tubes in the breast by way of a small incision. A radioactive substance is then delivered through the tube.
Holistic Treatments and Natural Cures for Breast Cancer
The incidence of breast cancer has grown to tremendous proportions. Its statistics are alarming and treatment options, though much improved in recent years, are ravaging to the body. Most people these days have a relative, friend, co-worker or acquaintance who has dealt with or is currently dealing with breast cancer.
Targeted therapy prescribes drugs to block the growth of cancer cells. It may, for example, block the functioning of an abnormal protein (e.g, HER2), preventing the growth of breast cancer cells.
The estimated death for females for 2009 from breast cancer was 40,170 and 440 for males. The five-year relative survival rates for all stages of breast cancer at diagnosis for 1999 to 2005 were 89 percent. This survival rate decreases significantly for advanced stages of breast cancer, making early detection key.
The Gerson Institute lists case studies of women who battled breast cancer through the use of the Gerson Therapy. This therapy prescribes a comprehensive program of immune system regeneration involving, but not limited to, vegetable juices

Hormone therapy is used to treat breast tumors that have hormone receptors. This form of therapy blocks cancer cell growth that is dependent on estrogen and progesterone. Hormone therapy options vary based on pre- and post-menopausal status. Tamoxifen, LH-RH agonist and Aromatase inhibitor are hormone therapy drugs.
Breast Cancer Treatment Options: Surgery, Chemo, Radiation and Hormone Therapy
Breast cancer treatment varies depending on the exact diagnosis and stage of the disease. One breast cancer patient may receive only a lumpectomy and radiation, whereas another in a more advanced stage may undergo a mastectomy

Holistic breast cancer treatments are controversial. Although many examples exist of breast cancer tumors shrinking and blood tests showing reductions in cancer cells by way of natural treatments, the lack of wide-scale scientific studies of holistic treatments makes resorting to them a risky approach for treating breast cancer.
Both men and women may be diagnosed with breast cancer, though it is much rarer in men. The National Cancer Institute's estimates for 2009 were nearly 193,000 new diagnosed cases of breast cancer in women and nearly 2,000 in men.
Breast Cancer Statistics: Diagnosis and Survival Rates
The most common treatment for breast cancer is surgery, which falls into two main categories. One is breast-sparing surgery such as a lumpectomy, which is removal of the cancer and a bit of the normal tissue around the area. The second type of breast surgery is the mastectomy. This is the removal of the entire breast. Lymph nodes are also removed to test for cancerous cells.
