light is the first book in a popular vampire romance series written by Stephenie Meyer. Prior to the publication of "Twilight" Meyer's claim to fame was her three young sons. She had not previously published anything

, not even a short story. According to Meyer, the inspiration for the characters in the original book was provided in a compelling dream she had in 2003.
The first book was ignored or rejected by several agents before being picked up by Writers House and subsequently picked up at auction by Little, Brown and Co. The publisher signed a three-quarter million dollar deal for three books. Fame and fortune followed. By 2009, Meyer had won awards such as the British Book Award, the New York Times best seller list and USA Today's list. The Twilight series held the top four places on USA Today's year end list in both 2008 and 2009.
Global publication in 37 languages with sales of more than 100 million copies is the current level. According to Meyer, her Mormon faith enables her to write a lighter, more romantic type of fiction with decreased emphasis on sex. The author does have some detractors, such as those who depict the hero as a stalker and controlling figure. Some critics say the heroine is described as a co-dependent, and is a weak example of a subservient female role.
Chapter 13 in the book "Twilight" is the basis drawn from Meyer's dream. The first book of the series was published in 2005 with the second "New Moon" published in 2006. Book three is "Eclipse" that appeared in 2007. The following year "Breaking Dawn was released. The entire series is considered to be romantic vampire fiction aimed at young adult reading level. Once the 4-part Twilight series was completed, Meyer planned to retell the story from the point of view of the hero. "Midnight Sun" was the name of the Edward Cullen book that was shelved when a plot leak put the rough copy of the book on the Internet illegally. The first 12 chapters in unfinished form can be seen on her official website.
"The Host", an adult science fiction novel, appeared in 2008. The Host is also the first in a proposed series followed by "The Soul" and "The Seeker." Other stories or books and book ideas include "Summer House"

, the plot of Twilight resembles features of many of the earlier novelists such as Bronte, Austen and even William Shakespeare. Some of the characters, particularly Edward, give a strong flavor of Bronte novel. In order to understand some plot twists and turns, you would need to have some background in vampire theory.
The Twilight series is now in movie form, with the first two in the series already released and the third due for release in June 2010. No decision has been made yet on the final book of this series. It may be released separately as a two-part movie.
Stephenie Meyer books have been a logical fill to a generation of readers who miss more Harry Potter books and movies. However, where the Rowling books tended to appeal to both males and females, the Meyer books are preferred by female readers. The popularity of the books continues amongst the young adult reading set.
