Montezuma Bowl at Arapahoe Basin
With a summit elevation of over 13,000 feet, Arapahoe Basin has some of the highest ski-able terrain in North America. In business since 1946, and with much of the 1,300 ski-able acres located above the treeline, more than 60% of "The Legend" consists of black or double-diamond black ski trails. Skiers don't come here to make a fashion statement or try out a new latte; Arapahoe Basin is all about skiing.
Little changes at Arapahoe Basin, but the '07-'08 ski season welcomed the first major alteration to The Legend in recent memory. Montezuma Bowl opened for business on the back of the mountain, and another 400 acres of mayhem was the result. Montezuma Bowl welcomes skiers at the Continental Divide and spits them out 1,100 vertical feet below. The ski trails in this area are similar to the unqualified skiers who attempt to ski here: black and blue.
Many of these ski resorts whisk their patrons up the hill in fabulous, weather-proof gondolas. Snow grooming machines constantly work to insure a smooth carpet of Rocky Mountain champagne powder and a swanky lodge greets skiers at the end of the day with a roaring fireplace and warm cup of hot chocolate.

Skiing: What's New In The West?
Colorado Skiing at Its Highest
Perhaps the most famous ski trail in all of Colorado, Pallavicini has many qualities [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they're all bad. Rocks, bumps, trees and alleys combine to form a playground for the best skiers in the world, and keep the wannabes from ever coming back. The steepness of the terrain and sphincter-clenching first drop will explain the lack of soccer-mom mini-vans in the A-Basin parking lot.
However [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not all ski mountains cater to all skiers. Hidden away on the Continental Divide, above and beyond all the rest, is a Colorado skiing destination that's long on expert skiing terrain and short on bells and whistles.
As bad as Pallavicini is, the ominous East Wall might be worse. No chair lift serves this area. To reach the top, kick off the skis and get in touch with your inner mountain goat.
Make no mistake, there are ski trails at Arapahoe Basin that almost anybody can manage. But, anyone who comes to Summit County to ski the bunny slopes will stop at Keystone or Breckenridge. A-Basin is where the hot dogs play, and they head right to the top, where trails with names like Wildcat, Powder Keg and Bear Trap beckon.
Some people put skiing at the center of their cosmos and can't wait till opening day, when they can head to the Rocky Mountain ski resort that makes no apologies. The skiers who want test thei
Ski trails at these resorts run the gamut. Some are geared towards skiers with expert level skills (or egos), while other sections of the mountain offer kinder, gentler slopes, where beginners can cut their teeth and geezers can practice crashing. The bottom line is ... the bottom line. These places want business; anybody's business.
Arapahoe Basin Ski Resort
Highway 6 is the only access road to Arapahoe Basin, and since the Eisenhower Tunnel opened in the late '70s, little traffic frequents this road [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which looks like something the Grinch would use to make his escape after stealing Christmas. The isolated location is enough to prevent most fair-weather skiers from accidentally stopping at The Legend. The rest will be scared away when they take one look at the Pallavicini Headwall glaring down at them.
Most Colorado ski resorts have a fairly open door policy when it comes to their customers. If you can plunk down the cash for a lift ticket and know which ski boot goes on which foot, the welcome mat is out.
