Portuguese are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the republican revolution Tuesday.
Today one hundred years ago, the Portuguese Republic was founded days after Maule II, son of the king Carlos I who was murdered by revolutionaries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was ousted by a military movement.
Tuesday morning, hundreds of people gathered in the city hall Square of Lisbon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where the establishment of the republic was proclaimed 100 years ago. A modern theater was shown to the public to recall the most memorable moment in Portuguese history. President Cavaco Silva, Prime Minister Jose Socrates and other high-ranking officials attended the celebration.
"It is a crucial moment that people show quality of work, strength, will and courage," said Socrates when talking about the present severe economic situation that the country is facing.
The presidential palace in Belem opened Tuesday to the public for free. Visitors had a great chance to take a look at the place where the president lives and works.
