Another player who's not too many miles from Bust Town is Ravens RB Ray Rice. Taken fourth or fifth in a lot of drafts, Rice is not performing to that level. He had one huge game against Denver with 159 total yards and two TDs, but other than that he's been pretty pedestrian.
Nearly halfway through: What have we learned? [link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u]
Now that we're at midseason, we know that Antonio Gates is far, far superior to other tight ends. Wait ... yeah, we totally knew that way before midseason. But what we didn't know was just how large that gulf would be between Gates and everyone else. Gates is averaging 14.6 points per game, and that includes a game in which he went out in the first quarter with one point. The next closest tight end? The Jets' Dustin Keller, with 9.3 points per game. Dallas Clark, taken ahead of Gates in a lot drafts, was averaging 7.3 when he suffered season-ending injury. Some figured Green Bay's Jermichael Finley was headed for a huge season. Before his season-ending injury, he was averaging 8.5 points. Not bad, of course, but miles away from Gates. *From here on out when I refer to fantasy points, I'm talking about standard scoring, 1 point per 10 yards rushing/receiving, 6 points per TD; 1 point per 25 yards passing, 3 points per passing TD.*
Even before the season, my Fantasy Blitz colleague Adam thought Maurice Jones-Drew was going to be a bust. The world at large disagreed strenuously, and MJD went third or fourth in a lot of drafts. Guess what? Adam knows of what he speaks. Here are just a few running backs who were averaging more fantasy points than Jones-Drew (11.1 points) through Week 8: LeSean McCoy (14.4), Matt Forte (13.7), Peyton Hillis (13.4), LaDainian Tomlinson (13.3), Jamaal Charles (13.0). A lot of people had Arian Foster on their radars before draft day, but a lot didn't. In fact, a gentleman e-mailer told me that when he snagged Foster in his draft, another guy piped up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "I don't have him on my list." But even those who were plugged in to Foster's high potential certainly didn't think he'd be the NFL's second-leading rusher (737 yards through Week Cool and the fantasy points leader in a lot of leagues (20 points per game in our ESPN league).
Before the season began — even after the first couple of games, perhaps — most people thought LaDainian Tomlinson was done and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u] was a stud. After seven games, Tomlinson is averaging 13.3 fantasy points per game to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u]'s 5.4. D'oh!
Now that we're about to pass the midway point of the season, what have we learned? Mostly that much of what we thought we knew early on has turned out to be folly. For example:
In Week 2, we thought Lions rookie RB Jahvid Best was going to have a monster season. He had 55 combined fantasy points* in his first two games. In the next five, he had 31 total points. Wah-wahhhhhh.
Midseason breakdown: We didn't know jack
I'll leave you with this little mind-blower. (I mentioned it in my sleeper pick this week, but it's worth pointing out again.) Going into Week 9, Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman is averaging more fantasy points per game (13.7) than Tom Brady (13.3), Tony Romo before his injury (13.0), Matt Schaub (12.9), Brett Favre (9.3) and Jay Cutler (10.9).
